Over the years many prominent New Yorkers became familiar faces at the church; among them John Bigelow, Henry James, Senior, Richard Dana, William Seward, and George Inness, and Lois Burnham Wilson.   Our first minister, Professor George Bush, was a first cousin four times removed of President George H.W. Bush (and five times removed of George W. Bush) .

For over two hundred years the New Church in North America has proposed a bold, forward looking Christian faith which encourages people to think for themselves, while also offering personally enriching answers to life's greatest questions.  Our hope is that our newly renovated building will help us to continue to do this here in New York City for generations to come.

Our recently completed interior renovations now provide us with a handicapped accessible building.   Our balcony has been transformed into a library (which houses our unique Swedenborgian collection of some 7,000 volumes).  Two large rooms have been restored and will provide space for meetings and other gatherings along with a spirituality-focused book sales area.    Our sanctuary, of Italian Renaissance Revival design, provides space for worship, community meetings, weddings and other celebrations.

The simplicity of our building forms a perfect backdrop for our beautifully landscaped garden and courtyard.  The fountain, which utilizes a baptismal font and features an original angel sculpture by Vera Manzi-Schacht, adds to the courtyard’s tranquility.   Seating is available for the public to enjoy this temenos of green on E. 35th Street.

About Us

Members of the New Church (Swedenborgian) first immigrated to New York City in the 1790’s.   In the early years they met for worship and study in various locations in what is now lower Manhattan.  In 1853, James Chesterman offered the Society three lots on 35th Street on the condition that a new church building be erected on the property.  In 1859 our current building was completed, and since that time we have been proud to be a part of the Murray Hill Neighborhood.
